Artist Statement, 2020

My work focuses on describing the humor and irony found in something bizarre and uncomfortable. My conceptual intent is to evoke these feelings in the viewer while only giving specific parts of a narrative, allowing the viewer to project one’s self into the work. I describe images that engage me including personification of pigs, strangely cropped bodies, caricatures and every day objects/ideas that are reflective of American culture. My work centers around themes of indulgence, gender, sexuality, sexual identity, and power dynamics. I find inspiration through my own experiences and identity, as well as from those closest to me, and work to communicate these feelings by subverting imagery and using references to pop-culture, particularly that which is present on social media. I use line-work and shapes of saturated color to create imagery that is simultaneously compelling and a viscerally uncomfortable experience for the viewer.
